Lessons in Grace From A Little Red Sports Car

Pepsi – Who says a quarterhorse arab cross can’t do dressage?

I was taking my daughter Lauren and her horse Pepsi to a horse show.

As we pulled out of the driveway with truck, trailer and horse, we waved to my husband Myles who was busy polishing his already spotless, red sports car.

My husband loves that red sports car.

While Lauren settled her horse at the show barn, I unhooked the horse trailer.  I did however, leave the big honking drop hitch with the 2″ ball on the back of the truck.  We got home late, knowing we would have to leave early to get back and feed the horse well before her classes began.

Next morning, five am, I crept out of bed without waking Myles.  Lauren and I climbed into the truck and backed out of the garage to turn around.  Now in my defense, I was in a hurry, it was dark, red does not glow in the dark no matter how spit and polished, and why would my husband park his red sports car outside right where he knows I back up to turn around?  Did I mention there was a great big honking drop hitch with a 2″ ball on the back of my truck?  I believe I did.

SMASH!

I looked in my rear view mirror to see what I had hit.  The red sports car came rolling into view with a great big gaping hole in the front end.

Lauren gawked at me like she was seeing me alive for the last time.  She waited in the truck while I took the long, lonely walk to the bedroom to wake my husband up from sweet dreams and tell him what I had done.

“Okay.  I’ll look at it later.  Tell Lauren good luck at her show, I’ll be there to watch her.”  Was all he said.

Stunned, relieved, grateful, more in love than ever, I went back to the truck and drove Lauren to the show grounds.  On the way there, I spoke to her about grace.  About finding a husband who loves and respects her more than anything, even his red sports car.  And then we talked about God’s grace, how it resembles what she had just seen, except magnified a gazillion times over.  How we can do nothing to earn nor spoil His perfect, unfaltering love for us.

My husband came to the horse show to watch his daughter.  Just as he was leaving he hugged me and kissed me good-bye.  “I love you…”  He said, and then with a grin.  “.. barely.”

I laughed.  I could happily accept that.  He is just a man after all.
